Florencia thirteen gang graffiti, 1998

Florencia / Florence thirteen [F13] is a predominately Latino street gang located in an unincorporated section of South Los Angeles between Slauson (north) and Firestone (south) from Central Avenue (west) in Compton (east) known as Florence/Firestone. Portions of this territory extends further west into the City of Los Angeles and due east into the City of Huntington Park making them one of the largest gang territories in Los Angeles County.

This is non the only Florencia gang neighborhood in Los Angeles county only it is the oldest and largest crossing three jurisdictions, Florence, City of Los Angeles and Huntington Park in a contiguous fashion. This gang formed during the 1950s and is among the oldest street gang located in S Los Angeles, predating the diverse Crip and Blood gangs in the area.

During the 1940s and 1950s, other Latino gangs in the area included Elm Street Watts, Hickory Street Watts, Lynwood Paragons, Ochentas, Watts Varrio Grape, Weigland Colonia Watts and the now defunct Watts Jardin.

Florence is merely known as F13, one of the oldest gangs that use "xiii" in their name which represents the 13th alphabetic character in the alphabet for marijuana or mota and not for the Mexican Mafia like many police enforcement professionals claim. Using "13" in a gang name really predates the founding of the Mexican Mafia in 1957 and the year of their city-wide influence of 1994. Almost teenagers in a gang, will oft fume marijuana with their peers which symbolized being "loco" or crazy, hence why many Latino gang names have either "xiii" or "locos" in their proper name (For more on this: https://www.streetgangs.com/billboard/viewtopic.php?f=146&t=1061 ).

When the Mexican Mafia started to build their prison gang during the 1960s, Florencia members were among some of the early members. Some of the F13 members that have been inducted into the Mexican Mafia include, Marcello "Gabby" Baeza, Arturo "Tablas" Castellanos, Braulio "Babo" Castellanos, Michael "Oso" Contrera, Juan "Topo" Garcia, David "Loco" Gallegos, Leonel "Wizard" Laredo, Ralph "Rafa" Mata, Victor "Gator" Meza, Armando "Perico" Ochoa, David "Puppet" Paez, Rosario "Chago" Ramirez and Ruben "Snuffy" Sanchez.

Early 1970s, Florence gang members on Holmes & Florence Ave.

Florencia has been involved in a large scale conflict with most of the Eastward Coasts Crips sets on the eastside of South LA over a drug dispute that occurred in 1999 or 2000. A fellow member of the 68 or 69 East Coasts Crips was the driver for a Florence 13 drug delivery. The driver may not take been completely aware that he was transporting somewhere between 200 and 300 kilograms of drugs. The driver along with with other Eastward Coast Crips members from the Half dozen Pacc, decided to keep the drugs starting the conflict (more: https://world wide web.streetgangs.com/billboard/viewtopic.php?f=143&t=48570&p=8772576). According to a RICO indictment, F13's leader, Arturo Castellanos, sent discussion in 2004 from his Pelican Bay State Prison house cell that he wanted Florence members to begin "cleansing" against the East Coast Crips. On August 5, 2005, Marcus "Hamburger" Mathis, 23 from 76 E Coast Crips was shot killed by Florence 13 member at 1407 E. Nadeau St. in Florence-Firestone.

In 2019, loftier ranking members of Florenia were able to negotiate an agreement to end the disharmonize with the East Coasts Crips which officially began in September 2019 after several weeks of talks.

The other Florence territories in Los Angeles are newer and smaller.
